Good production from center fielder Ichiro Toyota helped the St. Louis Cardinals topple the New York Mets, 6-4. Toyota went 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 times and drove in 3 for the Cardinals. Tsugunosuke Murakami earned the win to go to 2-1. He allowed 4 runs on 8 hits, with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work. Picking up the save was Danny Rivera, his 5th.

With St. Louis leading 3-2 in the bottom of the third, Toyota hit a fastball from Billy McIntyre for a run-scoring double. It was his 5th double of the season and put the Cardinals ahead, 4-2.

Toyota told the media after that game that the mood in the clubhouse is "extremely positive" after a win like that.

The Mets fall to 8-10 and continue to sputter in the early going.
