Francisco Viera was at the head of a Delmarva Shorebirds hit parade today at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. The 34-year-old went to the plate 5 times and came away with 5 hits, but it was the West Michigan Whitecaps that marched off with the 7-6 win.
"We didn't have it today," griped Shorebirds skipper Ryan Ramsey following the game. "Francisco did fine, but as a team, we didn't do it with the bats and we didn't do it pitching."
Viera did more than fine, dominating the Whitecaps at the plate during his record-making 5-for-5 performance.
"Each time I went to the plate, I was thinking about hitting the ball hard somewhere," the sweet-swinging shortstop told reporters. "When I focus on that, I usually have quality at-bats."
Francisco Viera hit an RBI single in the 2nd, singled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, singled in the 8th and hit an RBI triple in the 9th.
Currently Viera has 10 home runs and a .258 batting average.
