Texas catcher Ray Llewellyn had a terrific game, but it still wasn't enough to get his team a win. Llewellyn was 3 for 5 with a home run and a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once, even as Cleveland beat the Rangers, 9-5. Bruce Poff, the winning pitcher, is now 2-1. He went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 5 hits, while fanning 9 and walking 4. The Rangers, now 8-14, continue their sluggish start.

The Guardians got an important contribution from catcher Hiroshige Yamada, who in the bottom of the fifth knocked a 2-1 splitter into right for a 2-run home run. It was his 3rd home run of the season and put the Guardians ahead, 5-2.

"The boys came out and just played their butts off," said Cleveland manager Bersha Nainco.
