5 Straight Wins for Angels

The California Angels got a strong performance from pitcher Erick Vazquez, who stymied the Seattle offense en route to a win, 1-0, at Angel Stadium of Anaheim. Vazquez got the win, improving to 11-10. He allowed 6 hits and walked 2 over 5.2 innings. Vazquez allowed no runs. Dave Jackson recorded the save for California, his 11th of the season.
The Mariners had been locked in a 0-0 tie with the Angels going into the bottom of the second inning. That changed quickly when the 30-year old catcher Avery Maxwell came to the plate. Maxwell hit a run-scoring double on a 1-0 cutter from Seattle hurler Aidan Smith. It was Maxwell's 13th double of the year.
"We're a talented bunch when we're playing well," said Maxwell. "I think we showed that here."
The first-place Angels, at 79-65, now lead their division by 4½ games.
