Great Effort by Nationals SS Gan Not Enough in 10-9 Loss
Fans watched the Miami Marlins and the Washington Nationals fight to the finish.

The Miami Marlins withstood an impressive performance by Washington shortstop Tze-meng Gan to defeat the Nationals, 10-9, at Nationals Park. Gan hit 3 home runs, while adding 5 RBI and scoring three times. Miami reliever Chris Funderburg picked up the win, upping his record to 4-1. Caleb Westbay absorbed the loss. Adam Thomas finished the game for Miami and earned his 2nd save.

In the top of the seventh, Miami third baseman Alberto Cotto had a productive at-bat. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, Cotto stroked a run-scoring single to right. It made the score 9-8, Miami. For the game, he went 3 for 4 with 3 singles and was hit by a pitch, while adding 2 RBI and scoring once.

"I like the grit of this ballclub," Cotto said.
