Boston starter Reece Nichols put a stranglehold on the Montreal offense. The right-hander had complete command of his slider in leading the Red Sox to a 2-0 win. Nichols picked up the win for Boston, going 5.2 innings. He gave up no runs on 5 hits. He now sports a record of 11-8. Guadalupe Vasguez collected his 23rd save.

Alois Wollf dealt the Expos a blow in the bottom of the fifth. Batting with a runner on 2nd and Boston leading 1-0, Wollf, who finished 5th in the AL in runs with 102 last year, hit a first pitch curveball for a run-scoring single.

In comments to the Boston Gazette, Wollf admitted he's been told to improve his work habits. "But," he said, "I know when to take it to another gear."

The victory gives Boston a record of 64-43.
