300th Save for Almonte As Padres Hold Off Reds
Today was a historic day at Great American Ball Park in San Diego. Once again the gifted bullpen specialist Raul Almonte calmly did what he has done over and over -- he saved the game for the San Diego Padres. The 5-2 victory over the Cincinnati Reds was his 300th-career save and placed his name among the great relievers in baseball. Almonte nailed down the verdict by holding the opposition to no runs and no hits in his 1 innings.

After the final out, Almonte dropped to his knees and pointed a thankful hand toward the sky. After the game, Almonte told reporters, "This was in tribute to my deceased grandfather, who raised me and was such an important part of my life and upbringing. He would have been very proud of me today."

Almonte has collected 72 wins and 55 losses over his career with a 3.18 ERA. The 32-year-old hurler also has struck out 1152 batters in 1017 innings and allowed 827 hits.
